Was the Needle's Eye Really a Gate in Jerusalem? | Gospel of Matthew Ep 28

Did Jesus really mean a camel passing through a needle, or was it a small city gate in Jerusalem? Tonight we trace that popular explanation to the earliest source recent research has identified, alongside the debates surrounding Matthew 19. In this episode, we test three claims about Matthew 19: the added words "for any reason," the eunuch saying found only in Matthew, and the medieval origin of the needle-gate explanation. First, we compare Matthew's added words "for any reason" with Mark 10, the dispute Mishnah Gittin attributes to the Schools of Shammai and Hillel, marriage rulings in the Damascus Document and Temple Scroll, and passages in Josephus. Next, we look at the three categories of eunuchs in Matthew 19:12, rabbinic parallels in Mishnah Yevamot, and the disputed early church reports concerning Origen. Then we turn to the rich young man and the camel: rhaphis and belone, the Talmudic elephant sayings, the kamilos (rope) reading in minuscules 579 and 1424, and the earliest known gate explanation, an anonymous gloss in Aquinas's Catena Aurea.
